Sometimes, it seems like Otto and Ernie are joined at the hip, discussing their latest scheme. They found a snow shovel outside and came up with this great idea of launching a snow removal business. These future captains of industry were all excited getting their start-up off the ground. They prepared a basic flyer with all of their contact information to hand out around the community.
Their plan was to go door-to-door in the neighborhood and let people know about their new service and in hopes of getting some business with all the bad weather we have been having . With the talk of more snow on the way, the business seemed poised to take off.
Unfortunately, I had to burst their entrepreneurial bubble before they started knocking on any doors. There’s a whole host of things to consider when launching a new business. Government regulations are just one thing that comes to mind. They thought that I was joking, so I shared with them a recent story about 2 teens in Bound Brook, NJ trying to do the same work.
Matt Molinari and Eric Schnepf were going door-to-door looking for work shoveling snow and were told by the police to stop soliciting in the area. They were unaware that the community has regulations against unlicensed solicitors and peddlers. The police officer could have given them a ticket but didn’t and stressed that he was just concerned for their safety.
At this point, Ernie and Otto are pretty disillusioned about the next step. I hope that they just don’t sit on the couch and collect money from the government.
